Fourteenth Street Park

Designed as part of the Columbia Heights development plan, this neighborhood park provides both active and passive public space for the neighborhood. A tree-shaded fountain plaza engages the main street, providing places to sit and socialize or play cards. The basketball court on the east side is separated by a fence and stairs but is visible from all sides. The planning and design team facilitated a series of weekend design charettes that provided a forum for community input. Residents expressed a need for the programmatic elements provided and an interest in green design.

Low impact development strategies include a stormwater management system that uses planters above ground and tanks beneath the basketball court. Native and non-invasive plants will help simplify maintenance and make a positive contribution to the urban ecology. Rick Harlan Schneider was the Design Principal and project lead for this project while at Inscape Studio.
