Jamestown ES Natural Playground

The ISTUDIO team worked closely with the community and PTA to develop natural playscapes and outdoor classrooms. The concept begins with a loosely defined boundary that separates the active ball field and the playscape. This boundary took the suggestion of Jamestown settlement protective palisades and serves as a play experience itself. Topography, both natural and made, was worked into the play pocket niches.

The design focused on application of low cost natural material such as timbers, stumps, rocks, boulders and sand to meet the PTA’s budget requirement. These elements were placed thoughtfully to invite self-directed imaginative play. Plants were interweaved into the experience to furnish an important link to the natural world as well as to demonstrate change and growth.
