Powell Elementary School Interiors

Design features for this LEED-certified green school includes daylighting, natural ventilation, eco-friendly materials, and a master plan centered on green spaces and outdoor classrooms. The existing historic brick building was modernized to include new systems as well as the latest educational equipment.

Plans include a 35,000 sf addition carefully crafted in coordination with the DC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the federal Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), to streamline approvals.

In 2014, President Obama chose Powell ES as the location to announce his FY2015 Education budget.
