Stoddert ES Natural Playground

Throughout the community design process for this natural playground, the children came up with the most exciting ideas. After a site analysis and preparation of a number of precedents for, the team presented concepts for outdoor learning to parents and children alike. A weekend of facilitated design charrettes and group presentations yielded enthusiastic supporters of new ideas for the playground. The report documenting the process encapsulates common themes for the playground such as a nature trail, performance stage, open green space, and Early American landscapes.

The master plan incorporates low grass mounds around a central space and rivulets that catch rainwater. Active and passive play areas around the perimeter make use of durable natural materials and provide lessons in history, science, and social studies. Projects were identified that can be funded by the PTA and built with neighborhood sweat equity.
