Van Ness Elementary School with its rooftop curriculum gardens and outdoor classroom was cited at the annual AIA|DC Design Awards. The gardens + classroom are a nice way to enliven on often overlooked space, especially in urban areas where square footage is at a premium. Perforated metal panel wraps the exterior stair, extending up to fold over the stair to provide shade for the rooftop classroom. It’s a great place for STEM lessons that utilize the curriculum gardens.
